A Sure Thing

How many things in life are really a sure thing? Not many, if any. But there is one thing you can absolutely count on as a sure thing – That God will accomplish His purposes, and His purposes cannot be thwarted. It was the early days of the early church, and the apostles were bold in their proclamation of Christ. So bold that the Jewish leaders weren’t sure what to do with them. They had put Peter and John in prison only to see the witness of Christ advance and multiply (Acts 4:1-4). They wanted to silence them, but “finding no way to punish them” (Acts 4:21), they just threatened them to stop and let them go. A chapter later, again jealous of the spreading influence of the apostles, they locked them up again (Acts 5:17-18). Freed by the Angel of the Lord, they went right back to their Gospel mission. The Jewish leaders were at a loss as to how to squelch this rapidly expanding movement that threatened their own power and control, until Gamaliel offered his counsel. Listen to the wisdom of this man – “So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” My friend, when God is In It, it is a sure thing. If it is a man thing, it may thrive for a season, but not last. But if it is a God thing, not the smartest or strongest will stop its advance. Therefore, be bold my disciple friends, we cannot lose. Our risks are merely an expression of rock-solid faith in The Rock-Solid God!
