Your Best Friend
Psalm 37 has been a favorite for years, and yet this morning two words stood out to me like never before. Before even getting to the most loved verse four (“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart”), I bumped into them. They were a jolt and a comfort, a new mantra for my soul. Verse three reads – “Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.” There they were – “Befriend faithfulness”. Faithfulness doesn’t come naturally but requires a diligent pursuit. Self-protection comes naturally. Self-promotion comes naturally. Selfishly seeking success comes naturally. But the reality is that you can pursue those things and still be fearful, forgotten, and a failure in the eyes of the world. But faithfulness secures itself. Befriending faithfulness is a pursuit that can be attained. Regardless of the outcomes that are beyond your control, you and I can choose faithfulness and make it our closest friend. In the end, isn’t that what it is to trust God? You leave the outcomes to the Lord … and simply keep walking in faithfulness. My friends, make faithfulness your friend. Choose that which won’t betray you or disappoint you. Faithfulness is, and will always be, a faithful friend!
