SOMETHING FIRM
There are Bible words that we commonly use, and yet the depth of their meaning may not always be uppermost in our thinking when we use them. We may even sing them with exuberance and passion, but not fully grasp the richness of truth. Let’s tackle one of my favorites this week – “faithfulness”. In the Bible, this word can be used as a human characteristic or as a divine attribute, so we always must pay attention to the context of usage. Think with me about the faithfulness of God. Often used alongside the beautiful term of God’s “lovingkindness”, His faithfulness refers to His firmness or dependability. It’s the imagery of a rock that can’t be moved, or a refuge that can’t be overtaken. Not only is our God overflowing with lovingkindness to His own, but that lovingkindness is firm and unmovable … it is steadfast and solid. Unlike human love that can easily ride the wave of emotion and dip during tough times, God’s love is without wavering. There is never a time when He is too busy or too preoccupied to lean on in the circumstances of your life. His faithfulness provides that sure foundation you can run to at any and every time of the day or night. While every-thing and every-one lacks the divine attribute of “constant dependability”, you can find Him a sure and steady place to bring constancy and stability to your every-day. Does your mind waver with indecision over who and what to trust? Does your heart grow weary over disappointments? “For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever (Psalm 117:2). He is the one sure place to plant your feet and rest your mind – Great is the faithfulness of God!
