Could Your Neediness Be The Key To Your Spiritual Health?

In a fiercely independent culture like we live in, neediness is viewed as an undesirable quality. Nobody likes to feel needy, therefore often that feeling prevents the kind of relational care and support that we all desire. But is that unbiblical feeling keeping you from deeper friendships and greater spiritual growth? What if neediness (that we all have and feel) is actually the key to being loved and cared for by others and met powerfully by the Holy Spirit? Psalm 120:1 says, “In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me.” The apostle Paul in Romans 8:26 writes, “the Spirit helps us in our weakness.” In the famous faith hall of fame in Hebrews we understand that the great men and women of faith were, “made strong out of weakness.” My favorite New Testament letter is 2 Corinthians, because there the great apostle Paul isn’t afraid of bearing his soul, showing his weakness, and asking for help from his friends. Let me just say it this way – Arrogance isolates. In our pride, thinking we can figure it out, be enough, and soldier on, we actually end up isolating ourselves from the love of others, and act like the Holy Spirit is unnecessary in our lives. So, fight those normal (human) feelings that tell you to “be strong”, and in your real weakness (neediness) ask for help! Your friends can’t fix it, but they can love you and pray to the One who is sufficient to meet all your needs … and you may just find yourself growing in the Lord and in friendship.
