A Year of Wonder

The news of the day, the fallenness of man, and even the burdens of our daily schedules can rob us of wonder. We must fight to awaken our hearts daily to the awe all around us. Consider Psalm 104 as the Psalmist declares – “O LORD my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty”. Then watch how he lifts his thoughts to the greatness of God. What does he do? He looks at the created world around him – “He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot … You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills … You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate … He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting … Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great … I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.”

Want a year of wonder over boredom? A year of awe over the mundane? Start each day with your Bible on your lap, looking at the sky, the grass, the hills, the clouds. Go to the beach and watch the waves that crash into the shore, imagine the innumerable creatures in the waters, and the way the sun stretches across the horizon. As you stir your thoughts up in wonder, that wonder births awe in your heart, gratitude in your prayers, and praise in your days. You have a choice to make – Be controlled by the circumstances around you or choose to praise the Sovereign God of the Universe who controls all things and has given you all things richly to enjoy.
